Christine Executive Career Coach

The market already decided what level you operate at. You weren't in the room when it happened.

Most executives find out their positioning is off the same way; not from a rejection, but from a pattern of silence they cannot explain.

If that silence feels familiar, this issue is for you.

THE SIGNAL ISSUE

Christine C. Graves | Executive Authority Strategist

Something shifted in the market that most executives haven't caught up yet.

For years, the standard formula worked.

If you had strong results, a solid reputation, and the right referrals you had internal visibility that opened doors before you had to knock on them.

That combination carried a lot of weight and for a long time it was enough.

It is not enough anymore.

The market has changed how it evaluates executive leaders and most high performers have not updated how they present themselves to match it.

Today, opportunity moves through perception first.

Before anyone reviews your track record, understands the scale of what you have led, or a single networking conversation happens, the market has already placed you in a category.

Here are some of the categories you’re put in:

Strategic or tactical.

Transformational or operational.

Board-ready or replaceable.

Those decisions happen fast, quietly, and without you.

This week's issue is about what is actually driving that categorization and what to do about it before your next opportunity passes through the market without finding you.

#1 - Why you're being filtered out before anyone reads your resume

The executives I work with are not struggling because they lack experience.

They are struggling because the market is interpreting their experience at the wrong level.

Here is what many of you miss: the market is not evaluating you the way your last employer did. Your last employer had context and watched you operate. They saw the decisions you made, the rooms you commanded, and the problems you solved before anyone else knew they existed.

The external market has none of that.

This is what it has: your headline, summary, and the first three lines of your most recent role.

The category it places you in is based on those signals, before a human ever makes a conscious decision about your candidacy.

That’s why some executives with extraordinary experience are quietly struggling to gain traction right now, while others with objectively less experience seem to attract opportunities more easily.

Clarity scales faster than credentials.

The market is asking four questions about you right now:

What level do you operate at today?

What business outcomes are you known for?

What strategic lens do you bring?

Why should someone trust your leadership now?

If your positioning is not answering those four questions immediately and precisely, you are being filtered out, not rejected. Filtered before the conversation begins.

#2 - The blind spot that's costing you access

Nothing about my work changed while I was gone. My clients, my methodology, my offer - all of it stayed exactly the same.

But distance changed what I could see.

Patterns I had stopped noticing became obvious.

Assumptions I had been carrying without realizing it stood out clearly.

Things I had outgrown suddenly looked different from the outside.

I see the same dynamic with the executives I work with.

You think you have a networking, visibility, and/or job market problem.

You don’t.

You’re too close to your own story to see how the market is interpreting it.

Your leadership has evolved and your scope has grown. Your thinking has matured but the signal you are sending into the market which is your profile, your positioning, and your narrative is still introducing a previous version of you.

The market is not seeing who you have become. It is seeing who you were when you last updated your materials.

And that gap between who you actually are and how the market currently interprets you is where access gets harder than it should be.

Distance creates clarity and that’s what I provide.

#3 - The resume update that changed nothing

Article content

There is a moment I recognize immediately in career strategy sessions.

A senior leader tells me they updated their resume. Sometimes they say it is polished now. Sometimes they mention they hired someone to do it. Either way, the results have not changed.

No increase in recruiter outreach. No new conversations. Just silence.

That silence is not because they are unqualified.

It is because a resume, no matter how updated, no matter how well-written, is not the tool most executives think it is.

It does not drive traction on its own and it cannot do the work of a clear, precisely calibrated message.

It is an output of your positioning, not the beginning of it.

Last week's poll made this visible in real numbers.

90% of you updated your resume to apply for a role.

14% said it was long overdue.

6% updated it because someone requested it.

Every single one of those reasons is reactive.

And reactive positioning does not create the kind of traction that brings the right role to you.

It creates activity.

It creates a polished document.

It does not create demand for your leadership.

If you are waiting for the resume to do the heavy lifting you’ll be waiting a long time.

The work that creates traction happens before the resume.

Where are you focusing right now?

#4 - The moment every transitioning executive reach & this week’s poll to vote in.

Article content

The resume is updated.

The LinkedIn headline has been refined.

The networking calls are happening.

And yet the traction is not there.

The right opportunities are not finding you.

The inbox is quieter than it should be.

At this point, most leaders look outward.

More posts, comments, and engagement.

More volume.

But more noise rarely creates more traction at the executive level.

Quiet traction comes from better positioning.

From clarity, not activity.

From knowing how to make your message work, especially when you do not want to broadcast that you are in motion.

That is why I want to know where you are focusing right now.

Which quiet visibility move is your current focus?

Rewriting my positioning

Building private networks

Updating my profile quietly

You do not need to be everywhere. You need to be unmissable to the right people.

#5- Have Your Next Role Find You — This Friday

Article content

The leaders being found by the right opportunities today are not louder than everyone else.

They are clearer.

In a market that rewards volume; more content, more outreach, more visibility - the executives who are attracting the right roles are not broadcasting more. They are positioning better. They have made their message so precise that the right opportunity recognizes them before they have to raise their hand.

This Friday, I am hosting a live executive briefing on LinkedIn for the leaders who are quietly in motion.

If your resume is updated but your inbox is still quiet

If you want traction without announcing to your current employer that you are exploring.

If you are done applying and ready to be found

this is for you.
