The Market Has Already Concluded Something About You. Is It Accurate?

August 25, 2026•5 min read

Someone is on your LinkedIn profile right now.

They’ve already decided:

who you are,

what level you operate at,

and whether you are worth their time,

and they did it in under 30 seconds.

The 30-Second Conclusion Problem

They scanned, not reading every word, feeling something, and drawing a conclusion.

That conclusion is happening dozens of times a week, sometimes more, with recruiters, board members, hiring executives, and potential partners who will never tell you what they decided. They just move on.

The question I ask every executive I work with is simple: is what they are concluding that’s true about you?

In most cases it’s not. Why? The way it’s being presented is being interpreted below the level you operate at now.

That’s an interpretation problem that is one of the most expensive problems a senior leader can have, because you never see the cost, just the absence of the right opportunities.

Last week I posted a short video walking through exactly how this works. If you haven’t watched it yet, go watch it first, then come back here.

Vote In This Week’s Poll

Are people concluding what you want them to conclude within the first 30 seconds of reading your LinkedIn profile?

This week’s poll post in a very simple question:

Are people concluding what you want them to conclude within the first 30 seconds of reading your LinkedIn profile?

The options are Definitely, Probably, Probably Not, and No Chance.

If you have not voted yet, go vote. Then come back here.

Because what I am already seeing in the responses is exactly what I expected.

The majority of senior revenue-producing leaders are not answering Definitely.

The people voting are VPs, SVPs, and C-suite leaders with decades of experience and real results behind them. When they stop and honestly consider what the market is concluding about them in 30 seconds, most of them are not confident the answer is accurate.

That’s the interpretation problem, and it has nothing to do with your resume or confidence. The market is reading a previous version of you, and nobody has corrected your positioning signal.

What David Colvin Discovered

Article content

I had to share what a client said to me recently, because it captures this better than I can explain it in the abstract.

David Colvin has built his career in sales and marketing leadership in the medical device industry. But when he stopped and looked at how the market was interpreting him, this is what he saw:

"I think they had me clinically pigeonholed and narrowed into a certain clinical space, even though I had been in seven or eight major clinical spaces. Most recently, they viewed me as a sales leader within urology. And I felt I had more to offer than that."

He was not being seen at the level he was actually operating at. He was being categorized by his most recent role, not by the full scope of what he was capable of.

Sound familiar?

When David and I started working together, he was chasing roles the traditional way - sending resumes, working with recruiters, and applying online. It wasn’t working. What resonated with him was the idea that the right role needed to find him, but he didn’t know how to make that happen.

Something shifted three to four months into the process.

"The interest I am receiving now is at a more senior level, in an earlier stage company. That is what we came to believe is where I would be happiest and could perform. I am getting a lot of interest at a higher level than I ever have previously."

The part that stayed with me:

"Now I have a much lower level of anxiety about disruption in a career because I know how to go about getting back on track. I understand the process. I know how to get myself in front of the right people. I can do it again."

That’s the shift; not just a new role, but a different relationship with how the market sees you, and the confidence that comes from knowing you can control that signal.

David also said something that surprised him:

"People I worked with and know, but had not been in contact with in many years, when I reached out, they were thrilled to hear from me. Everybody really does want you to do well, and everybody wants to help. The real gold is the network and the people we know."

If you are sitting on a network you have not activated because you do not want to bother people, David's experience is worth considering.

This Week On My Profile

In addition to the video and the poll, I shared a picture this week with a caption that I keep coming back to:

Your LinkedIn profile is a first impression that happens without you in the room.

Within 30 seconds, someone has already concluded who you are, what level you operate at, and whether you are worth their time.

They are always concluding something. The only question is whether it is what you want them to conclude.

Have Your Next Role Find You - Join Me Friday

Article content

This Friday, August 28 at 1pm CST, I am going live on LinkedIn for 20 minutes.

The session is called Have Your Next Role Find You, and I am going to show you exactly where your profile is creating the wrong conclusion and what to do about it.

We cover three things:

The interpretation problem. Why the market miscategorizes you in 30 seconds and why you cannot see it happening in real time.

The Clarity Matrix. A diagnostic tool I developed to show you exactly what your profile is currently signalling and where the signal is breaking down.

The three shifts that move you from credible to inevitable.

This is a positioning signal intervention, not a resume review.

If you’re a senior leader in marketing, sales, or operations who is still employed and wants the right opportunities to find you before urgency forces your hand, this 20 minutes is for you.

Set your reminder now so LinkedIn notifies you the moment we go live.

For confidential access, DM me directly.

One Question Before You Go

If a hiring executive or board member landed on your LinkedIn profile right now, what would they conclude about you in the first 30 seconds?

If you’re not certain the answer is what you want it to be, pay attention to that.

See you Friday.

Best, Christine
