What I learned the first time I ran it live | Issue #4
The room confirmed something I already believed, and challenged something I did not expect.
I ran The Inevitable Executive for the first time last Thursday.
75 minutes. Live. A working session, not a presentation.
Here is what I learned.
The diagnosis lands faster in a room than it does in a post.
When I write about the interpretation problem - the gap between the leader you already are and the level the market is currently evaluating you at - it resonates. I can see that in the analytics, in the DMs, in the people who book briefings.
But in a live session, something different happens.
The moment a participant hears their own positioning described back to them - not as a general concept but as their specific situation - the recognition is immediate and visceral.
It is not "that makes sense."
It is "I have been feeling this for two years and I did not have a name for it."
That is the moment the work actually starts.
The gap is almost never where people think it is.
Most executives come into this work believing their positioning problem is a visibility problem.
They think if they post more, network more, or update their resume, the right opportunities will find them.
What I consistently see is something different.
The visibility is often fine.
The positioning signal is the problem.
The market is seeing them, and it’s just filing them in the wrong category.
Every recruiter scan, introduction, and LinkedIn profile view reinforces the same incorrect conclusion; quietly and, invisibly, without a single piece of feedback to tell them it is happening.
That is what makes it so hard to solve alone.
You can’t see your own positioning signal from the inside.
What I’ll do differently next time.
The session worked and the framework is sound. The participants did real work and left with language they can use immediately. I am taking time now to review what landed hardest and what needs more space.
The part that needs more space: the moment between diagnosis and rewrite.
Most people can identify the gap once it is named. The harder work is translating that diagnosis into the specific language that recodes how the market reads them; in a headline, in a summary, in the first sentence of a networking conversation.
That translation is where the real shift happens, and 75 minutes is tight for it.
The next version of The Inevitable Executive will give that translation more room.
This is the final issue of How The Market Sees You for now. When The Inevitable Executive opens again, you will hear about it here first.
I will be back with my next edition of Top 5 Executive Career Insights in two weeks.
Before then, if you want to see this work in practice, join me live this Friday at 12pm CST. Have Your Next Role Find You is a 20-minute LinkedIn Live where I walk through the exact framework senior leaders are using to correct their signal before the right opportunity passes them by. No theory. Just the framework, live. Register here: https://www.linkedin.com/events/7492665878879244288?viewAsMember=true
