The market doesn’t read your resume first. It reads your signal. If that signal is introducing someone you outgrew three years ago, the right opportunities will never find you.
THE 30-SECOND DECISION YOU NEVER KNEW WAS HAPPENING
Every time a recruiter, hiring manager, or board member lands on your LinkedIn profile, they make a decision about you in under 30 seconds.
It doesn’t happen after reading your summary, reviewing your experience section, or after carefully considering your career trajectory.
It happens In the time it takes to scan your headline and your first few lines.
That decision determines everything that happens next; which conversations you get routed into, which opportunities come your way, and which ones never will.
Here’s the part most of you don’t realize.
The market is not scanning for your experience. It is scanning for your level. It is asking one question: does this person operate at the level I need, or not?
If your signal communicates that clearly, you get routed into the right rooms.
If it does not, you get routed into the wrong ones.
You’ll never know the difference because the right rooms never send you a rejection letter.
They just won’t call you.
WHAT ONE EXECUTIVE COULD NOT SEE FROM THE INSIDE
I worked with a Senior Director of Marketing at a publicly traded healthcare company.
She had rebuilt a portfolio, grown a team of sixteen people, drove three years of double-digit growth, and won multiple marketing awards. She was operating at a VP level by every measurable standard.
But external recruiters kept offering her peer-level roles at different companies. Her own organization kept stalling on her promotion.
She couldn’t explain why. Her resume looked strong and her LinkedIn was updated. She was networking, having coffee chats, applying to roles she was genuinely qualified for.
Everything looked fine from the inside.
What she couldn’t see (because you can never see this from the inside) was that her profile was introducing a previous version of her. The market was meeting a Senior Director who was very good at her function. It was not meeting the leader who had actually rebuilt the portfolio, grown the team, and driven the growth.
Those two people are completely different, and her materials were telling the wrong story.
We didn’t polish her profile. We rebuilt her signal from the diagnosis up;identifying exactly where the market was misreading her and recoding every element that was contributing to the misinterpretation.
Within weeks, the quality of inbound completely changed. Recruiters who had been sending lateral roles started reaching out about VP and above. Her network started routing her into different conversations; ones she had never been included in before.
And when her own company saw the external market responding to her differently; she was promoted to VP by unanimous executive vote.
She was not discovered; she was finally being interpreted correctly.
THE FRAMEWORK THAT CHANGED HER SIGNAL
There is a specific framework I use to diagnose and correct this gap. I am not going to share the details here because the work is too precise to reduce to a newsletter section.
I can tell you this though; the framework addresses three things: what you actually drive at a business level, the gap between where you are and where the market thinks you are, and how every line of your profile is currently being interpreted by the people making decisions about you.
Most executives try to solve a signal problem with a visibility solution by posting, networking and refreshing their resume constantly.
None of that works, because none of it addresses the interpretation problem at its source.
The fix is not more activity. The fix is signal alignment; being correctly categorized at the exact moment the market scans you.
SOMETHING IS COMING
I am working on something right now specifically designed to address this, and it is the first time I have offered it.
It is called The Inevitable Executive - a 75-minute live session that shows you exactly where your signal is breaking down and gives you the language to correct it in real time.
The waitlist opens next week. You will hear from me first when it does.
If this landed, stay close.
2) WHAT HAPPENED IN LAST WEEK'S POLL
Last week I asked: If you're quietly exploring what's next, what's the first thing you're doing to gain traction?
The results told me something important.
Slightly more than half of respondents are focused on visibility tactics; updating profiles and contacting trusted people within their networks. 45% are focused on clarifying their story, which is a good start but still doesn’t address the major problem with most executive profiles.
Almost no one is focused on the thing that actually determines whether any of that activity converts: how the market is interpreting their signal.
That is the gap. And that is exactly what The Inevitable Executive addresses when the waitlist opens next week.
3) THIS WEEK'S POLL - VOTE NOW
When you think about how the market currently sees you, how close is it to how you actually operate?
Market sees me accurately.
Slightly off. Too junior.
Way off. Market misreads me.
If your answer was anything other than the first option, that gap has a name. And it is fixable.
Vote in the poll below and tell me in the comments which option you chose: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/christinegravesexecutivecareercoach_the-market-does-not-see-your-title-it-sees-activity-7475201177295478785-RC6e?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAAFnz9kBJfCMGafmPlVgkGMV6g0vBjIw4tg
4) THEY DIDN'T REJECT YOU. THEY NEVER CONSIDERED YOU.
If you missed last week's video post, it is worth 90 seconds of your time.
The executives I work with are not being rejected. They are being miscategorized, and those are not the same problem.
Rejection means the market evaluated you and said no. Miscategorization means the market never evaluated you at all.

5) THIS FRIDAY: HAVE YOUR NEXT ROLE FIND YOU
More than 80% of executive roles are filled through connections, not applications.
If no one is reaching out about your next opportunity, it is not because you are not qualified. It is because you are not findable at the right level, by the right people, in the right rooms.
This Friday I am streaming a 20-minute Executive Briefing on LinkedIn Live: Have Your Next Role Find You.
Inside, I will walk you through:
The first strategic move to make before touching your resume or profile
How to build a leadership brand that gets referred behind closed doors
Stealth visibility tactics that work without signaling you are on the market
One advanced positioning strategy you can use immediately
The most sought-after leaders are not refreshing job boards. They have built a reputation that quietly attracts the right offers without ever needing to look.
If you want to be considered before a role goes public, this is how it is done.
