The AI Wall Nobody Is Talking About And Why It's Keeping Senior Leaders Stuck

Article content

The job market much noisier now, which makes it appear harder on the surface. This noise has a very specific victim: the leader whose value is real but whose signal is blurry.

If you’re a senior revenue leader who has been putting in the work; applying, networking, following up, showing up, and still not getting the traction you know you deserve, here’s something that most career coaches will not say out loud.

Your effort is not the problem.

Something Shifted. Most Leaders Haven't Caught Up to It Yet

AI was supposed to make the hiring process faster and smarter for everyone. In theory, it would help candidates put their best foot forward and help employers find the right talent more efficiently.

That’s not what happened.

47% of all job applicants are now using AI to write or improve their resumes. Employers know this so they’re screening tools. The result is a market where polished looks identical to everyone else's polished.

What actually got lost in the middle is humanity.

When everyone's resume sounds optimized and everyone's LinkedIn about section hits the same keywords, the tools designed to surface great talent are now surfacing a version of great talent that looks identical to everyone else. The leaders who are exceptional; the ones who have built revenue engines, turned around organizations, sat in the room where the real decisions get made, are getting filtered out alongside people who learned to write better prompts.

That’s the AI wall.

The Leaders Breaking Through Are Not Working Harder

Here is what I have observed working with senior executives in this market: the ones landing good roles that fit and sometimes didn't even exist before they showed up — are not sending more applications.

They’re the ones whose positioning is so precise the right person immediately understands their value.

Here’s what that looks like in practice.

A Company Wrote a Job Description Around One Person

One of my clients - a senior marketing executive with deep tech experience, reached out to a family friend he hadn't spoken to in decades. She was a CMO at a quantum computing company. She told him upfront: there was no role for him. She was thinking about hiring three managers.

He listened, then told her what he thought her organization needed:

Instead of 3 managers, a VP-level person to build the revenue generation operating system - the framework for scale that had to exist before managers could do anything meaningful.

She went back to her C-suite saying they needed to hire my client, and two weeks later they posted a job description he wrote himself. He went through five interviews, made it to the final two, and got the offer.

A role that didn’t exist was created for him.

It happened because before that conversation, we had done the work of getting his positioning razor sharp. He knew exactly what he brought, how to name it, and how to make the person across from him feel like it would be a mistake to let him walk out the door. He didn’t get lucky.

That’s what correct positioning does for you.

Why Effort Alone Won't Get You There

I talk to senior leaders every week who are exhausted because they’re doing everything they were told to do; networking, applying, following up, and staying visible.

They’re not getting the traction they deserve.

The average C-suite search runs 12 to 16 weeks or more before an offer is ever extended - and that is before notice periods or transitions; four months of sustained effort, done right, is the baseline. Leaders doing it with blurry positioning are spending that time and still not landing.

When I look at what is actually happening, is almost always positioning, specifically, the gap between how good they actually are and how clearly the market can read that.

When your positioning is blurry, here’s what happens:

The right people meet you and don't quite know where to place you.

Conversations go well but don't convert.

You get to final rounds and lose to someone who interviewed better, not someone who was better.

Opportunities that should find you don't, because the positioning signal you're sending doesn't match the level you're operating at.

This is a positioning signal problem.

The One-Two Punch That Works Now

Article content

There are two things working in this market, and they only work together.

The first is positioning which is ot a polished resume or a keyword-optimized LinkedIn headline. Positioning = a clear, specific articulation of what you uniquely bring, who needs it, and why you are the obvious choice. It has to be precise enough that the right person hears it and immediately thinks: this is exactly what we need.

The second is human connection because the one thing that cuts through an AI-flooded market is a real person making a real impression on another real person. Networking has always mattered. Right now, it matters more than ever.

Here’s the catch: networking without positioning is just conversation. You can meet the right people and still not convert, because they leave the conversation without a clear picture of where you fit.

Positioning without connection is just a well-written document sitting in a database.

The leaders getting hired right now, i.e. the ones having roles created for them are doing both. Precise positioning, then genuine human connection (relational, NOT transactional) built on top of it.

What I See That Most Leaders Can't See About Themselves

The hardest part of this work is not writing the resume or updating the LinkedIn profile because those are the outputs.

The hardest part is that most senior leaders can’t see their own differentiator clearly. They’re too close to it. What feels ordinary to them, i.e. the way they walk into a broken organization and immediately see what needs to change, the way they build something from nothing and make it look inevitable, the way they earn trust across a skeptical room, is exactly what makes them exceptional. They just can't see it because they have been doing it for twenty years.

I see it immediately and give them the language for it.

That language is changes everything. When a leader can name what they do in a way that makes the right person lean forward, the whole dynamic shifts. Opportunities start finding them versus having to constantly do the chasing.
